Description

The ruins of Santiago the Elder are the remains of some old buildings in Santiago de los Caballeros from colonial times, including a church built in 1495.

These are the remains of the settlement established in 1506 by Commander Nicolás de Ovando and which was destroyed by an earthquake in 1562. There is a path, a military construction, walls, a well and a church. These ruins are also called the ruins of Jacagua. They are abandoned and overgrown.

They are located on private land and it is the owner who acts as a guide for the few visitors who come here.
