Description

The Malecon is one of the main avenues of Santo Domingo, the administrative and economic capital of the Dominican Republic. The avenue runs along the Caribbean Sea, it begins at the Colonial Zone and ends before the port of Haina. At the beginning it is the avenue Georges Washington and then it is the highway of May 30. On the Saint Domingue East side, the Avenue d'Espagne extends the Malecon along the Caribbean Sea.

It is a very busy avenue and with a lot of traffic jams especially at rush hour, many trucks take this avenue which crosses Santo Domingo from East to West which makes a lot of traffic. On the other hand, when night falls, after working hours it regains a certain calm because the traffic has decreased a lot.

All along the avenue, but mainly between the Colonial Zone Avenida Maximo Gomez, there are restaurants (Adrian Tropical, D'Luis Parrillada, Vesuvio...), bars, hotels (Jaragua, Crowne Plaza...), casinos, shopping centers (Malecon Center), administrations but also parks (Plaza Juan Baron, Eugenio María de Hostos) where the inhabitants of Santo Domingo like to come for a walk with their family and enjoy the fresh air of the sea.

It is also a cultural place where the carnival takes place, concerts like the Merengue festival where thousands of Dominicans come to listen to music and dance, exhibitions... It is also a sports place where the inhabitants come to make their jogging and enjoy the sports facilities at Place Guibia.

The Malecon is one of the main tourist attractions in the capital of the Dominican Republic. It's more than just an avenue, it's a bit like the soul of the city.
