The Ozama Fortress was built from 1502 to 1508 by the Spanish colony during colonial times, it was the first large military complex in America. The Ozama Fortress is considered a World Heritage Site, like other monuments in the Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo.
Its construction began near the Rio Ozama by the then governor Nicolas de Ovando in order to protect Santo Domingo from the various attacks of the French, Portuguese, English conquerors and pirates.
It is shaped like a stone castle and retains its original medieval appearance. La Tour del Homenaje is a medieval castle, the central tower is 18 meters high.
Diego Columbus and his wife occupied the rooms of the Tour del Homenaje, later these rooms served as a prison and each room has a different name. During the Trujillo dictatorship a cell was called the last farewell cell. This cell was reserved for those condemned to death.
Ozama Fortress consists of:
- La Torre del Homenaje.
- El Portal de Carlos III.
- The Estatua de Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo.
- El Polvorín.
- El Fuerte de Santiago.
- La Plataforma de Tiro Baja.
- Las ruinas de la Primera Obra.
