Description
The bay of Las Calderas is located in the province of Peravia, about 15.5 south of Bani and 80 from Santo Domingo the capital of the Dominican Republic.
It is a bay that is part of the Caribbean Sea, it was discovered by Christopher Columbus who came to take refuge there to protect the fleet from a cyclonic phenomenon. The bay is protected from the prevailing winds by the Bani dunes which form a protective wall.
The bay of Las Calderas is home to a military naval base, a nautical club, a small marina and fishing port, a beach (Punta las Salinas), salt marshes and the famous Bani Dunes (Scientific Reserve of the Félix Servio Ducoudray Natural Monument ). The bay is of great ecological and scientific interest with many species of birds, sea turtles, moluscs, fish, flamingos, iguanas...
Around the bay there are a few hotels (Las Salinas Hotel), villas for rent and restaurants, the area is frequented mainly by local tourists who come with family or friends to enjoy the bay and the beach. Santo Domingo, the capital is 1h30 by car.

Pleasant place to visit during a stay in Santo Domingo. Prefer the weekdays, quieter.
