Description
The Ebano Verde scientific reserve is located in the Cordillera Central, between the towns of Jarabacoa and Constanza. It currently has approximately 23.1 square kilometers.
Its main objective is to protect the region's large green ebony plantations which are endangered in other parts of the Dominican territory.
This scientific reserve also protects the sources of the Camu, Jimenoa and Jatubey rivers, the basins are in the protected zone. It was the first protected area under private administration created in the Dominican Republic.
Fauna and flora of Ebano Verde:
Ebano Verde Science Reserve is one of the regions with the highest number of endemic plants in the region with 621 different plant species, of which around 153 are endemic to the island of Hispaniola. As for the fauna there are 59 species of birds, divided into 11 orders and 21 families, of which 17 are endemic to the island. Here live the cigüita de Constanza, la Cotorra, el Carrao y el Canario, all these endangered birds.
Visit of the reserve:
As a scientific reserve, this area does not allow visits, but some parts are accessible to allow tourists and visitors to appreciate the natural beauty of this ecological monument and to understand the reasons for its conservation. Access is relatively easy by following the road that leads from Bonao to Constanza. The lands of the reserve offer a rugged and mountainous relief ranging from 800 meters to 1565 in Loma La Golondrina. Every year, it rains from 1,500 to 3,000 cubic millimeters, which makes the reserve one of the wettest areas in the Dominican Republic.
The most important points of interest for ecotourism are Arroyaso, located on the southwestern edge of the reserve. It supplies waterways from the wooded area of the reserve.
Another impressive attraction is the "Sendero Baño de las Nubes", a tropical forest that offers the spectacle of lush vegetation wedged between a layer of cloud and dew.
