Description

The Pico Duarte is the highest mountain in the whole of the Caribbean, with its 3,087 meters above sea level, it is located in the central part of the mountain system known as the Cordillera Central, in the heart of the Dominican Republic. Unlike most of the mountains of the Caribbean islands, the Cordillera Central is not of volcanic origin, but of sediment and metamorphosed rocks.

The mountain is covered with pine vegetation, which makes the place a typical space away from the heat and exhaust fumes found in the Caribbean. Also it has a brother called Pelona, which is only two meters lower and is separated by a cliff one km long.

Trails to reach Pico Duarte:
There is a choice of routes available to climb Pico Duarte and it usually takes two or three travel days to reach the top. Most tours depart from Jarabacoa, Pedregal and the Sabaneta Dam. The trip includes several crossings of rivers native to the heights of the surrounding mountains and the meeting of parrots, finches and other exotic birds that inhabit the region.

There is a good network of trails that lead to the top of Pico Duarte. The best way to get there is through the town of Cienaga, near Jarabacoa. The path is about 23 kilometers with a vertical drop of 1977 meters and a refuge 5 kilometers from the summit. Jarabacoa tourist tour agencies regularly organize excursions using mules to carry food, sleeping bags and overnight supplies. Some marked freshwater springs are found along the way. The vast majority of hikers prefer this route. For the more adventurous, there is another path northwest of the town of San Juan de la Maguana. It's a trip of four days and three nights.

Surprisingly the Pico Duarte was only climbed in 1944 to celebrate the commemoration of independence. Currently, more than 3000 people make its ascent every year. The name honors one of the founders of the Dominican Republic, Juan Pablo Duarte, he was also called Pico Trujillo during the tyranny of the dictator.
