Description
Hoyo de Pelempito in Pedernales is an impressive intra-mountain valley located 700mts above the sea in the Sierra de Bahoruco. It is part of a spectacular geographical area whose triangular shape is the result of the convergence of several geological faults and the collapse of a huge coral reef emerging from the ocean. The gaping hole that forms the Hoyo de Pelempito is like a large cave 7 km long, the roof of which has collapsed forming a large depression. Its bottom is 348 ms while the depth of its edges are higher over 1800 m high.
The area has been conditioned to receive the influx of domestic and foreign tourists. It allowed the opening of a reception center at 1,165mts above sea level with toilets, picnic area, dining room and beautiful nature trails.
The isolation of the Hoyo de Pelempito attached to heterogeneous natural conditions make it a refuge for a large number of endemic species and a rich and varied fauna and flora. It is the greatest biodiversity and the greatest biological diversity of all the ecosystems of the island. It highlights the presence of nineteen endemic bird species, representing a total of forty-nine bird species. Among the mammals that inhabit this magnificent place we can mention soleándote and jutia, endemic species of the island and endangered.
The flora has 1,434 different plant species, of which 439 are endemic. The most abundant plant species are orchids, 10% of which are endemic.
On the way to Pelempito de Cabo Rojo and Pedernales, will surprise you with vast pine forests and trails of red coated with bauxite, which has been exploited in time. At dawn or dusk, you will be surprised by the concentration of birds that nest in the region.

Hoyo de Pelempito is located about thirty kilometers from Pedernales, the place is quite difficult to access (it is advisable to have a 4x4 vehicle) but the trip is worth it.
