Description

The Sierra de Bahoruco is a protected natural area of the Dominican Republic which extends over 70 km and covers an area of 2400 km². It has diverse vegetation ranging from very dry forest at sea level to humid forest that grows in mountainous regions, where pine trees are seen over 2,000 meters above sea level. The average temperature of the area is between 25 and 15 degrees Celsius.

The highest point of this mountain region is the Loma del Toro, with a height of 2367 meters. The robustness of the relief makes the area practically deserted. However, the inaccessibility of the mountains served as a refuge for the Indians who rose up with the cacique Enriquillo in what was the first social revolt in the New World. Over the following centuries, hundreds of runaway slaves used the area as a fortified refuge. This rugged terrain area is suitable for mountain tourism.

The Sierra de Bahoruco is a nature reserve with many endemic species. It highlights the presence of nineteen endemic bird species, representing a total of forty-nine bird species, including the canary and the picturesque parrot and the parakeet. There are also a variety of reptile species, including lizards and snakes. Amphibians and mammals complement wildlife.

The flora has thirty-three species of plants endemic to the region as well as seventy-one endemic species of the island of Hispaniola, totaling ninety-four endemic species scattered throughout the region. The most abundant plant species are orchids.

The Sierra de Bahoruco is an area of great interest for lovers of ecotourism and adventure.
