Faro a Colon Santo Domingo
Monument and Museum in Saint Domingo East built in honor of Christopher Columbus.
Columbus Lighthouse description
The Faro a Colon (Columbus
Lighthouse) is an imposing monument in the east of Santo
Domingo that was built in honor of Christopher Columbus.
It was inaugurated Oct. 6, 1992 (after six years of work) to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the discovery of the Americas. It is a mausoleum that houses the remains of Christopher Columbus, a difference exists with Spain, which claims to hold the remains of the popular navigator in the cathedral of Seville.
The Faro a Colon is also a museum dedicated to Latin America where you can find many items of Latin American countries and of the world.
Inside can discover many rooms (poorly lit), each dedicated to a different country such as Uruguay, Mexico, Brazil ...
At the main entrance of the monument, the flags of all American countries symbolize brotherhood among nations and the union of different races, cultures and religions who live on Earth.
The Faro a Colon is a building shaped giant Christian cross that does not appeal to everyone because of its architectural concrete, it would be over 200 meters long and 60 meters wide and 31 high (we check on the internet because there are all sizes !!!).
It is also a lighthouse (as the name implies) that sends a very powerful light beam in a cross in the sky over Santo Domingo (off for several years).
It is one of many places to visit in Santo Domingo. It is located next to the cave Los Tres Ojos. The nearest hotels are the Tropicana, the Acuarium Suite Resort and the Hotel Victor.
