It was originally founded as the Valle de las Aguas in 1776 because the village is surrounded by rivers Las Cuevas and the Yaque del Sur.
The Padre Las Casas economy depends largely on agriculture, particularly crops of coffee, beans and rice. In addition, it has untapped mineral deposits.
